What is Reef
Reef is an Italian brand of seating systems and modular sofas designed to overcome some of the limitations of traditional sofa construction. The project was born from the meeting of design, materials research, and the development of construction solutions focused on lightness, durability, comfort, and freedom of configuration.
Reef systems are composed of independent elements that can be combined, moved, and reconfigured to adapt to spaces and different modes of use. How a Reef sofa is built
The supporting structure of Reef sofas is not based on the classic wooden frame, but uses a structural core made of high-density polystyrene, chosen for its lightness, stability, and durability.
Questa particolare architettura consente alla struttura di sopportare carichi decisamente superiori rispetto a quelli normalmente richiesti a un divano tradizionale, pur mantenendo un peso contenuto. È proprio il rapporto tra elevata resistenza strutturale e leggerezza a rendere possibile la realizzazione di moduli anche di grandi dimensioni, facili da spostare e riconfigurare.
L’assenza del tradizionale telaio in legno offre ulteriori vantaggi: la struttura non marcisce, non può essere attaccata da tarli o altri insetti xilofagi e non costituisce un ambiente favorevole alla proliferazione delle muffe. Queste caratteristiche rendono la tecnologia costruttiva Reef adatta sia agli ambienti interni sia agli spazi outdoor, oltre che a contesti caratterizzati da elevata umidità, come SPA, aree wellness, piscine e ambienti hospitality.

Why Reef is different from a traditional sofa
A traditional sofa is generally designed as a relatively static element, with a defined structure, position, and configuration. Reef starts from a different principle: designing the seat as a system capable of adapting to the space and to the way it is used.
Reef modules can be used individually or combined to create sofas, chaise lounges, seating islands, and compositions of different sizes. Independent backrests and accessories allow, depending on the collection, changing the position and orientation of the seating without necessarily being bound to a permanent configuration.
The particular construction technology also allows combining lightness and high structural strength. Even large modules can be moved and reconfigured more easily than a conventional sofa.

Il sistema modulare
La modularità Reef non consiste semplicemente nell’accostare elementi di un divano. Il sistema è stato progettato per consentire ai singoli componenti di funzionare autonomamente e assumere configurazioni differenti nel tempo.
Pouf di diverse dimensioni costituiscono la base del sistema e possono essere utilizzati singolarmente oppure accostati. Schienali mobili, cilindri e altri elementi permettono di definire la posizione di seduta e creare configurazioni lineari, angolari, contrapposte o a isola.

Structure, materials
Each Reef component is designed considering the material not only for its appearance but above all for the function it must perform.
The structural core in high-density polystyrene permette di ottenere elementi leggeri, resistenti al carico, isolanti e non soggetti ai problemi tipici delle strutture lignee. Poliuretani e materiali destinati al comfort vengono selezionati in funzione della risposta richiesta alla seduta.
Particolare attenzione è dedicata anche ai componenti in acciaio. Gli elementi vengono lavorati e modellati in funzione del progetto, personalizzati attraverso incisione laser, successivamente sabbiati e verniciati a polvere per ottenere superfici resistenti e finiture coerenti con il linguaggio estetico Reef.
Anche le parti meno visibili sono considerate parte integrante del progetto. Il fondo dei moduli utilizza Cordura ad alta resistenza, scelta per proteggere la parte inferiore della seduta e contribuire alla stabilità del modulo a contatto con il pavimento.
Un elemento distintivo dei prodotti Reef è inoltre l’iconica etichetta in gomma con logo in rilievo. La scelta della gomma, al posto delle tradizionali etichette tessili, non è soltanto estetica: il materiale non si impregna e offre un’elevata resistenza all’usura, allo scolorimento e al deterioramento, caratteristiche particolarmente importanti per prodotti destinati anche all’utilizzo outdoor e in ambienti esposti a umidità.
Dalla struttura interna fino all’etichetta, ogni materiale viene scelto in relazione alla funzione che deve svolgere. Struttura, comfort, protezione, stabilità, resistenza e dettagli identificativi diventano così parti dello stesso progetto.
Tessuti e rivestimenti
Il rivestimento è parte integrante del progetto Reef e viene selezionato non soltanto per le sue caratteristiche estetiche, ma soprattutto in relazione all’ambiente e alle condizioni nelle quali il prodotto verrà utilizzato.
Reef propone una selezione di tessuti per indoor e outdoor, con differenti caratteristiche tecniche, texture, grammature e finiture. Resistenza all’usura, stabilità alla luce, comportamento in presenza di umidità, traspirabilità, facilità di manutenzione e sensazione al tatto sono alcuni dei parametri considerati nella scelta del rivestimento.
Per gli ambienti esterni, le aree piscina, le SPA, l’hospitality e le applicazioni nautiche vengono selezionati tessuti tecnici specifici, capaci di rispondere alle diverse condizioni di utilizzo senza rinunciare alla componente estetica e al comfort.
I divani Reef sono progettati con rivestimenti completamente sfoderabili. Le cerniere YKK permettono di rimuovere il rivestimento per le operazioni di manutenzione e, quando necessario, di sostituirlo senza dover sostituire l’intera seduta.
La sfoderabilità contribuisce anche alla longevità del prodotto: nel tempo è possibile rinnovarne l’aspetto, cambiare colore, finitura o tipologia di tessuto mantenendo la struttura originale.

Schienali e cilindri indipendenti permettono di modificare posizione, profondità e orientamento della seduta, lasciando grande libertà nella configurazione dello spazio.
Riviera interpreta invece il sistema Reef attraverso una geometria più morbida e arrotondata. I moduli mantengono una presenza monolitica, ma gli angoli stondati e i profili più morbidi modificano la percezione del volume e il rapporto della seduta con lo spazio. Pouf, schienali e componenti indipendenti possono essere combinati per creare poltrone, divani, chaise longue, lettini e composizioni modulari di grandi dimensioni.

Reef production does not simply follow the logic of a standardized industrial chain. The preparation of the different components, the processing of materials, the covering, the assembly, and the finishing involve manual interventions and checks during the various stages of production.

Who designed Reef?
Reef was conceived and designed by the Italian designer Verniere Scarpa, founder and Creative Director of the brand. The project comes from his research on a different way to conceive the sofa, surpassing the traditional wooden structure through lighter, more durable, and reconfigurable modular systems.
Scarpa oversees the creative direction of Reef and the development of the collections, working on shapes, proportions, materials, and construction solutions with the aim of integrating design, functionality, and technology.
